Meta Appoints CRED Founder Kunal Shah to Lead WhatsApp
In a major strategic shakeup, Meta has announced that Indian entrepreneur and CRED founder Kunal Shah will take over as the new head of WhatsApp. This leadership transition coincides with Meta’s significant $900 million investment in CRED, which secures the tech giant a 20 percent minority stake and brings the startup’s valuation to roughly $4.5 billion. Shah, who has transformed CRED into a powerhouse in the Indian fintech sector, is set to step down as CEO of his company to join Meta’s global leadership team, bringing his signature "builder mentality" to the world's most popular messaging platform.
The outgoing head of WhatsApp, Will Cathcart, will transition to a new role within Meta, where he will focus on pioneering artificial intelligence initiatives. During his seven-year tenure, Cathcart was instrumental in scaling WhatsApp to over three billion active users and expanding its suite of encrypted communication tools. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed his enthusiasm for the change, emphasizing that Shah’s expertise will be vital as WhatsApp looks to unlock its full potential. For his part, Shah shared his excitement about joining the team, noting that he sees significant room for growth in WhatsApp's future and is eager to collaborate with the broader Meta leadership to take the platform to its next chapter.
