Rising Deepfake Threats: UAE and Saudi Workplaces at Risk
A recent study by cybersecurity firm KnowBe4 has highlighted a growing vulnerability within the workforce of the UAE and Saudi Arabia, revealing that 52% of employees believe they could be deceived by deepfake scams while on the job. The realism of these AI-generated videos and audio clips has reached such a sophisticated level that 88% of local workers admit they struggle to distinguish between genuine and fraudulent content. This technological hurdle is further complicated by the high-pressure nature of the modern office; nearly half of the employees surveyed confessed that workplace distractions and tight deadlines frequently lead them to bypass security protocols, even when they are fully aware of the risks involved.
The situation is exacerbated by the rapid integration of autonomous AI into daily business operations without adequate oversight. Cybersecurity leaders in the region report that 84% of organizations are already utilizing AI agents in their workflows, yet roughly one in four companies operate without any formal governance for these tools. As malicious actors increasingly leverage machine-speed attacks, such as deepfake phishing and AI hijacking, the gap between emerging threats and corporate defense strategies is widening. Experts warn that unless organizations prioritize governance and secure their hybrid human-AI workforces, they remain highly susceptible to significant security breaches.
