Sony to Phase Out Physical PlayStation Discs by 2028

Thu, Jul 2, 2026(2h ago)Technology

Sony has officially announced that beginning in January 2028, it will cease the production of physical game discs for its PlayStation platform. Moving forward, all new titles will be transitioned exclusively to digital formats, requiring players to either purchase games directly through the PlayStation Store or redeem digital codes provided by retailers. The company clarified that this policy shift will not affect any titles released before the 2028 deadline, ensuring that existing physical collections remain functional.

The decision stems from a significant shift in consumer behavior, as digital media adoption continues to vastly outpace physical disc sales. While industry experts like Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners expressed surprise at the speed of this transition, many view it as a logical evolution following the introduction of disc-less console versions in 2020. This move has sparked debate among gamers concerned about the impact on the second-hand market; however, Sony maintains that this strategy is necessary to stay aligned with modern trends and deliver a seamless, world-class gaming experience.
