US Government Lifts Export Restrictions on Anthropic’s Latest AI Models

Thu, Jul 2, 2026(1h ago)Technology

The U.S. Commerce Department has officially removed export restrictions on Anthropic’s advanced Fable and Mythos AI models, reversing a mandate issued just weeks ago. Originally, the government had ordered the company to suspend access to these tools due to national security concerns regarding their potential misuse by foreign intelligence agencies. Following the initial June order, Anthropic was forced to temporarily pull the models entirely, as they lacked the capability to verify user nationalities in real time. However, after implementing robust safety protocols, the company confirmed that the government has now cleared the models for broader use.

Moving forward, Anthropic is deepening its collaboration with U.S. officials and industry partners, including Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, to establish new security standards for mitigating AI jailbreaks. While the company faces a complex regulatory landscape and has had a historically strained relationship with the current administration—partly due to its refusal to support autonomous weapons or domestic surveillance—the green light for Fable 5 and Mythos 5 marks a significant step toward integration. Anthropic is now preparing for a wider rollout of these tools to its domestic and international partners in the Glasswing program, even as the company navigates the broader trend of increased federal scrutiny on frontier AI development.
