Samsung Restructures US Operations Amid Headquarters Relocation to Texas
Samsung Electronics is shaking up its US operations as it transitions its headquarters to Texas, resulting in significant job cuts across its consumer electronics and mobile divisions. The company confirmed that 739 roles in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, are impacted by this shift, alongside approximately 100 layoffs at its Plano, Texas, facility. While Samsung has extended relocation offers to many of the affected staff, others were unfortunately let go as the firm works to optimize its workforce structure. These changes come as a surprise to many, particularly given that the New Jersey team had only recently settled into new offices less than a year ago.
The layoffs reflect a broader struggle for Samsung’s consumer electronics arm, which faces stiff competition from companies like Apple and Chinese rivals like TCL, as well as rising costs driven by the AI chip boom. While the company’s semiconductor division is enjoying record-breaking profits fueled by AI demand, the mobile and appliance sectors are feeling the squeeze. By moving its headquarters to Texas, Samsung aims to align itself with a more business-friendly environment and consolidate its teams near its existing chip factories and regional hubs. Despite internal concerns among staff regarding potential further restructuring, Samsung maintains that these moves are strictly focused on operational efficiency and fostering better collaboration within the evolving tech landscape.
