Sam Altman Dismisses Fears of an 'AI Jobs Apocalypse'

Tue, May 26, 2026(45d ago)Technology

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently shared his evolving perspective on the influence of artificial intelligence in the workplace, suggesting that the feared "jobs apocalypse" is unlikely to materialize. Speaking at a Commonwealth Bank of Australia conference, Altman admitted that he was initially overly pessimistic regarding how quickly AI would displace entry-level white-collar positions. While he previously warned of significant industry-wide shifts, he now finds it encouraging that these dire predictions have yet to come to fruition, acknowledging that his early intuitions about the speed of workforce disruption were off the mark.

A core reason for this shift in thinking is the realization that many aspects of professional life remain fundamentally human. Altman noted his own experience using AI to manage communications, only to find that he still preferred the authenticity of handling certain interactions himself. He emphasized that the desire for genuine human connection acts as a natural barrier to total automation, suggesting that many roles will be redefined rather than eliminated. Ultimately, Altman remains optimistic that while the labor market will certainly evolve, the human element of employment is far more resilient than many industry analysts originally anticipated.
