UAE Announces Start of Islamic New Year 1448 AH
The UAE's Fatwa Council has officially declared that Sunday, June 16, marks the first day of Muharram, signaling the start of the new Islamic year, 1448 AH. This confirmation followed a meticulous review of scientific data and lunar observations, supported by input from the Khatm Astronomical Observatory in Abu Dhabi, which successfully spotted the crescent moon. As the Hijri calendar is intrinsically linked to the lunar cycle, the onset of each month depends on these precise sightings, with months traditionally spanning either 29 or 30 days.
To commemorate this significant occasion, the UAE government granted residents a public holiday on Monday, June 15, resulting in a well-deserved long weekend for many. While most enjoyed a three-day break, those living and working in Sharjah were treated to an extended four-day weekend. In its official announcement, the Fatwa Council offered heartfelt prayers for the nation’s continued stability and prosperity, expressing hope that the coming year would bring blessings to the country’s leadership, the Emirati people, and all residents living across the nation.
