Dubai Records Four Fatalities from Red Light Violations in 2026
Since the beginning of 2026, Dubai has seen a troubling rise in traffic accidents linked to drivers running red lights. According to Dubai Police, there have been 41 such incidents, tragically resulting in four deaths and 55 injuries. Brigadier Jumaa Salem Bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic, identified common catalysts for these crashes, such as distracted driving, impulsive rushing to beat the signal, and poor judgment of speed. He emphasized that these intersections are high-risk zones, and ignoring traffic signals creates life-altering consequences for innocent road users.
To curb this trend, Dubai Police are reinforcing road safety through increased monitoring and strict legal consequences. Drivers who jump a red light face a Dh1,000 fine, 12 black points, and a 30-day vehicle impoundment, which requires a hefty Dh50,000 release fee. Even more severe penalties apply in fatal cases, where offenders can face at least one year in prison and fines reaching Dh100,000. Authorities are now urging motorists to prioritize vigilance and patience at intersections, reminding everyone that stopping at a red light is a fundamental responsibility that safeguards the entire community.
