Indian Expat Cleared of Wrongful Conviction in Sharjah Villa Rental Scam
A senior Indian professional based in Dubai recently found himself caught in a legal nightmare after being wrongfully sentenced to prison and deportation for a villa rental scam he had no part in. The ordeal began when he entrusted a Sharjah-based real estate firm to list his property, only for the brokers to defraud a tenant of Dh104,000. The perpetrators deceptively convinced the tenant to bypass standard verification and transfer funds directly to their account using a fake email address to impersonate the owner. Because the victim filed a police report, the homeowner was unknowingly implicated in the case and only discovered he had been convicted in absentia when he was detained at Dubai International Airport.
Upon his arrest, the man learned that his contact information had been misrepresented in court files, preventing him from ever receiving notice of the proceedings. Represented by Advocate Shamsudeen Karunagappally of Ayesha AlDhaheri Advocates, the owner successfully appealed the ruling. His legal team demonstrated that merely owning a property and providing registration documents for advertising purposes does not establish criminal intent or involvement. The Sharjah Court ultimately overturned the initial verdict, acknowledging the complete lack of evidence against the owner and fully acquitting him of all charges.
