A Mother's Courage: Beating Cancer While Pregnant
For 40-year-old Jordanian expat Samar, what she initially dismissed as routine pregnancy symptoms turned into a life-altering battle. Five months into her fourth pregnancy, persistent breast pain and swelling led to a shocking diagnosis of stage 3 breast cancer. Facing the dual terror of her own mortality and the safety of her unborn child, Samar turned to the specialists at Burjeel Cancer Institute in Abu Dhabi. With a delicate treatment plan in place, she underwent chemotherapy throughout the remainder of her pregnancy, narrowly stopping the treatment just two weeks before successfully giving birth to her son, Elias.
The journey was far from over after the delivery, as Samar immediately resumed intensive treatment, including surgery, further chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Throughout the grueling process, she found unwavering support from her husband, who shaved his head as a sign of solidarity when she began losing her hair. Now, having successfully navigated her treatment and reunited with her four children, Samar is sharing her story as a vital message to other expectant mothers. She and her medical team urge women never to ignore persistent changes or discomfort during pregnancy, emphasizing that while many symptoms are harmless, proactive medical evaluation is essential to ensuring the health of both mother and baby.
