New UAE Law Ensures Full Salary Protection for Employees During Epidemics
The Federal National Council (FNC) in the UAE has officially approved amendments to the law regarding communicable diseases, offering significant job security to the workforce. Under these new regulations, any employee who is infected, suspected of being ill, or identified as a contact during a pandemic must be restricted from the workplace to protect others. Crucially, these mandatory absences will not be deducted from an employee’s regular leave balance, and workers are legally entitled to receive their full salary throughout the entire isolation period, provided they have medical certification from the appropriate health authorities.
This legislative update stems from lessons learned during the Covid-19 pandemic, aiming to resolve past uncertainties regarding how quarantine periods should be managed in the workplace. By placing the responsibility on employers to enforce these health safety measures, the law provides a clear framework that prevents employees from being unfairly penalized for outbreaks. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the UAE to refine its public health and labor policies, ensuring that the country remains well-prepared to handle future health emergencies while safeguarding the financial wellbeing of its residents.
