Navigating school admissions in Dubai has become more streamlined thanks to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority’s (KHDA) latest comprehensive placement guide. Designed to help parents understand how grade levels are determined, the policy emphasizes age as the primary factor for early childhood education, specifically for Pre-KG through KG2 (or FS1 to Year 1). For older students entering Grade 1 (Year 2) and beyond, the transfer certificate becomes the main reference point. The authority also introduced a transitional age cut-off for the 2026-27 academic year, which primarily affects new students entering the system for the first time, while ensuring those already enrolled remain unaffected.

The guidelines also clarify how schools should handle unique situations, such as international transfers or students who may be ahead of their peers. Notably, the KHDA stresses that factors like language proficiency, maturity levels, or temporary gaps in schooling are not valid reasons to hold a child back. Instead, schools are expected to provide tailored support, such as differentiated teaching or individual learning plans, to help students integrate into their age-appropriate grade.
