UAE Observatory Tracks SpaceX Rocket Collision With the Moon

Wed, Aug 5, 2026(45d ago)UAE

A piece of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, which had been drifting through space since its 2025 launch, made a high-speed impact with the lunar surface this past Wednesday. The upper stage of the rocket, which previously transported the Blue Ghost and Hakuto-R lunar landers, had been trapped in a complex orbit dictated by gravitational pulls and solar radiation. Astronomers at the UAE’s Al Khatm Observatory in Abu Dhabi closely monitored the event, hoping to capture evidence of the crash, such as a bright flash or a plume of displaced lunar dust.

Despite the technical ambition of the project, observing the collision proved to be an uphill battle. The impact occurred during daylight hours while the moon was low on the horizon, creating significant atmospheric interference and visibility challenges. Although scientists calculated that the crash could displace over 1,100 metric tons of lunar material, the observatory’s high-powered telescopes recorded no visible flash or debris cloud during the critical window. As research continues, the global scientific community is now looking toward data from other observatories to determine if any subtle signs of the collision were detected by alternative equipment.
