Unpredictable Weather in the UAE: Heavy Rain Meets Record-Breaking Heat

Wed, Aug 5, 2026(1h ago)UAE

The United Arab Emirates experienced a rare and dramatic weather contrast this Wednesday, as heavy rainfall swept across parts of the country while temperatures in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region soared to a staggering 51.2°C. Despite the sweltering heat, the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) reported that overcast skies and showers were expected to persist through August 7. Social media footage captured the unusual sight of rain lashing Fujairah and Al Dhafra, prompting authorities to issue orange and yellow alerts. Motorists have been urged by Abu Dhabi Police to drive with extreme caution, adhere to variable speed limits, and avoid flooded areas as strong, dusty winds accompany the downpours.

While the intense rainfall might seem surprising during peak summer, meteorologists point to the global El Niño climate pattern as the primary driver. This phenomenon is currently increasing atmospheric moisture and humidity levels across the region, creating the perfect conditions for convective cloud formation. However, experts warn that this moisture does not offer relief from the heat; rather, the extreme temperatures are expected to continue alongside the volatile weather. Authorities are strictly advising residents to stay clear of valleys and flood-prone zones, keep updated via official NCM reports, and prioritize safety until the current unstable weather conditions subside.
