Reviving the Historic Hejaz Railway: Turkey and Saudi Arabia Forge New Logistics Ties

Wed, Jun 10, 2026(1h ago)World

Turkey and Saudi Arabia have officially moved closer to strengthening their logistical and rail infrastructure by signing two significant memoranda of understanding. These agreements focus on modernizing rail technology, digitizing transport systems, and sharing expertise to lower environmental impacts within the sector. By prioritizing human capacity building and localizing railway industries, both nations are laying the groundwork for a robust, interconnected trade network that could fundamentally transform regional transport.

Beyond these technical agreements, officials are actively exploring the revitalization of the legendary Hejaz Railway, which once connected Damascus to Madinah in the early 20th century. Recent test runs stretching from Turkey through Iraq into Saudi Arabia have already confirmed the project's feasibility. Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu emphasized that this ambitious plan aims to establish a modern transit corridor for both tourism and global trade, potentially offering an alternative route to the Strait of Hormuz. As negotiations continue, this initiative promises to restore a historic connection while positioning the two nations at the heart of future global trade routes.
