Over 2.3 Million Students Appear for NEET-UG Retest Amid Heightened Security
On Sunday, approximately 2.3 million medical aspirants across India and several international locations participated in the re-examination of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG). This massive logistical exercise was organized by the National Testing Agency following the cancellation of the May 3rd exam due to a significant question paper leak scandal. To restore public trust and ensure a fair testing environment, authorities implemented rigorous security protocols, including biometric verification, manual frisking, and the deployment of 50,000 jammers. Furthermore, all 5,440 examination centers were under constant watch through an extensive network of 140,000 CCTV cameras, with feeds monitored at both central and state levels.
Beyond technical security, several state governments facilitated the process by offering free public transportation to candidates, while specific centers provided extra support for parents and students with unique needs, such as a Kolkata student who sat for the exam under medical supervision following a severe accident. In an effort to dismantle the networks responsible for the previous leak, the government enforced a temporary ban on Telegram, a platform cited as a hub for organized cheating syndicates. Despite a few minor controversies regarding dress codes and religious attire, the overall administration of the exam proceeded with an emphasis on transparency and efficiency, marked notably by Prime Minister Narendra Modi adjusting his own travel schedule to prevent traffic disruptions for students.
