Recovery Efforts Underway for Broad Peak Avalanche Victims

Wed, Aug 5, 2026(45d ago)World

The Alpine Club of Pakistan has confirmed that a high-altitude recovery mission has successfully brought the mortal remains of renowned climber Nirmal Purja, along with Zhong Wang, Nima Sherpa, and Kilu Sherpa, down to Broad Peak Base Camp. This technically demanding operation was spearheaded by a dedicated ground team led by Mingma G, with vital support from Pakistani and Nepali climbers. While this recovery brings a somber sense of closure for the families of these four individuals, officials noted that three other climbers remain missing on the mountain. Search efforts will continue as conditions allow, ensuring that the remaining victims can eventually be returned to their loved ones.

The global mountaineering community continues to mourn the tragic loss of ten climbers who were swept away by an avalanche on the 8,051-metre peak last Thursday. Memorial vigils have been held in Kathmandu, where family members and colleagues gathered to pay tribute to the lives lost, including veteran mountaineers and international record-holders. As the recovery teams push forward under extremely difficult conditions, they have already successfully retrieved several other victims over the past few days. The families of the deceased are now preparing to bring their loved ones home, hoping to lay them to rest with the dignity they earned through their extraordinary careers and passion for the mountains.
