Trump’s Strategy: Why Strikes on Iran Were Repeatedly Shelved

Sun, Aug 2, 2026(45d ago)World

Since the onset of the current conflict, President Trump has repeatedly claimed that he has halted or called off planned military strikes against Iran to prioritize diplomatic negotiations. While the administration asserts that its primary objective is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities, Trump has frequently portrayed these pauses as evidence of Iran’s growing desperation for a deal. In contrast, Tehran has consistently challenged this narrative, maintaining that its military remains fully prepared to retaliate against any aggression and denying that it has ever requested a reprieve from US attacks.

The pattern of military brinkmanship followed by sudden diplomatic retreats has surfaced multiple times, most notably in March, June, July, and August. In each instance—from threats against power plants to tensions involving oil hubs—the President has cited "constructive conversations" or requests from regional leaders as the justification for standing down. Despite these intermittent lulls in military action, both nations remain locked in a high-stakes standoff, with Iran warning against further "adventurous" actions even as the US continues to hold out for a comprehensive agreement regarding the Strait of Hormuz and nuclear de-escalation.
