Former Wrestling Chief Acquitted in High-Profile Harassment Case

Mon, Aug 3, 2026(1h ago)World

A New Delhi court has officially acquitted Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former president of the Wrestling Federation of India, of all sexual harassment and stalking charges. The 69-year-old politician, formerly affiliated with the ruling BJP, had faced serious allegations from prominent female wrestlers who accused him of demanding sexual favors and inappropriate physical contact. Following the ruling, Singh’s legal counsel, Rajiv Mohan, stated that his client was "honourably acquitted" after the judge identified significant contradictions and inconsistencies within the testimonies provided by witnesses.

This verdict follows a period of intense public scrutiny and massive protests that gripped India throughout 2023. Olympic medalists like Sakshi Malik and world champion Vinesh Phogat had spearheaded the movement, camping in Delhi for weeks to demand accountability and the removal of Singh from his post. While supporters celebrated outside the courtroom with firecrackers, the case remains a flashpoint for the sports community. Meanwhile, prosecutors have signaled that they are reviewing the court's decision and are considering challenging the outcome in a higher court.
