Flavio Bolsonaro Secures US Entry Amidst Brazil Departure Controversy

Wed, Oct 28, 2026(2h ago)World

The United States has signaled it will grant a visa to Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former Brazilian leader Jair Bolsonaro, following his recent election defeat. While the U.S. State Department has remained tight-lipped regarding specific travel details, reports from outlets like CNN and The Washington Post suggest the senator has already arrived in the country. This development comes despite a Supreme Court order in Brazil that required him to surrender his passports due to ongoing investigations into corruption and money laundering, which also threaten his parliamentary immunity.

The departure has sparked sharp criticism from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who described the act as "shameful," suggesting that fleeing the country indicates a person who has something to hide. Although authorities state that his Brazilian and diplomatic passports were canceled and there is no official record of his departure, reports indicate that the senator holds Italian citizenship, which may have facilitated his exit. As Flavio Bolsonaro navigates these legal challenges and the transition into a new role leading the political opposition, he continues to face mounting pressure, including a Supreme Court-ordered investigation into his campaign’s potential foreign funding and social media manipulation.
