Serbian Police Shoot Attacker at Israeli Embassy in Belgrade
A tense situation unfolded in Belgrade early Wednesday when a police officer stationed outside the Israeli embassy was forced to open fire, killing an attacker who had assaulted him with two knives. According to outgoing Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, the assailant, who was shouting extremist slogans during the confrontation, managed to wound the officer in the face before being neutralized. Authorities have since identified the perpetrator as a suspected supporter of Daesh from the city of Sabac, noting that his social media presence contained clear indicators of radicalization.
In response to the violent incident, Serbian authorities have elevated the nationâs terrorism threat to a "red alert" level. This heightened security status mandates increased police visibility and more rigorous inspections across sensitive infrastructure and crowded public spaces. While acts of terrorism are generally uncommon in the country, this marks the second security breach at the Israeli embassy in recent months, following a June attack involving an individual armed with a crossbow. Investigations are currently ongoing to determine the full extent of the attackerâs background and potential network.
