Riyadh Air Clears Key Hurdle for US Expansion
The U.S. Transportation Department has officially granted Riyadh Air the authorization to operate flights between Saudi Arabia and the United States. This regulatory green light marks a significant milestone for the kingdom's newest national carrier, which is backed by the Public Investment Fund. Since its inception in 2023, the airline has been moving aggressively to establish its global footprint, recently celebrating its inaugural flight to London. As part of its growth strategy, the carrier is actively pursuing partnerships with international giants like Delta Air Lines, which is already looking to launch a direct route from Atlanta to Riyadh this coming October.
Under the leadership of CEO Tony Douglas, the airline is positioning itself as one of the most ambitious aviation startups in modern history. With a massive fleet order of Boeing 787s, Airbus A321neos, and A350s, the company aims to serve over 100 international destinations by 2030. This expansion is central to Saudi Arabia’s broader economic vision to reduce reliance on oil by fostering growth in tourism, technology, and logistics. With routes to major hubs like Cairo, Dubai, and Madrid already on the map, the carrier is rapidly evolving into a major player in the global aviation industry.
