India’s Central Bank Maintains Steady Rates Amid Inflation Uncertainty

Wed, Aug 5, 2026(1h ago)Business

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has opted to keep its repo rate steady at 5.25%, choosing a cautious wait-and-see approach as global energy prices fluctuate. While many neighboring nations have aggressively hiked interest rates to combat inflationary pressures and currency instability, the RBI maintains a neutral stance, prioritizing economic stability. Governor Sanjay Malhotra emphasized that while headline inflation has nudged above the target due to rising fuel costs, underlying price pressures remain manageable, allowing the central bank to avoid a hasty policy shift until further data provides a clearer picture.

Despite the stable rate environment, the central bank has expressed measured confidence in India's economic resilience, slightly upgrading its growth forecast to 6.7%. A major factor in this steady outlook is the country’s strong balance of payments, bolstered by over $41 billion in foreign inflows triggered by recent government and central bank initiatives. While the RBI remains vigilant regarding potential risks from geopolitical instability and monsoon patterns, the overall message is one of balanced caution. Analysts anticipate that the bank will continue to rely heavily on incoming data to guide future decisions, leaving room for potential rate adjustments as the fiscal year progresses.
