Gold Prices Surge to Multi-Week Highs

Wed, Aug 5, 2026(1h ago)Business

Gold prices experienced a significant rally this Wednesday, hitting their highest point in nearly seven weeks and setting the stage for the metal's strongest daily gain since February. Spot gold jumped 4.4% to trade at $4,256.85 per ounce, successfully breaching the key 50-day moving average. This bullish momentum was largely driven by a combination of declining U.S. Treasury yields and renewed optimism surrounding potential peace negotiations concerning the Strait of Hormuz. As the dollar hit six-week lows against a basket of major currencies, investors began pivoting back toward precious metals, encouraged by a reduced likelihood of immediate interest rate hikes.

Despite this recent upward momentum, gold remains significantly lower than its January peak, down 24% following a volatile period marked by energy inflation concerns and aggressive monetary tightening. While central bank demand has hit its lowest point since 2022 and ETF outflows have weighed on the market, analysts at J.P. Morgan note that rate-sensitive ETF demand is once again becoming a primary driver for price movement. Meanwhile, the broader metals complex also saw gains, with silver climbing nearly 5% and platinum and palladium reaching multi-week highs. Experts suggest that while these metals are recovering on diplomatic hopes, sustained long-term growth will likely remain dependent on future interest rate cuts, which are not currently anticipated until at least 2027.
