PhonePe Gears Up for UAE Expansion With Preliminary Regulatory Green Light

Wed, Sep 23, 2026(1d ago)Business

Indian fintech giant PhonePe is officially setting its sights on the international stage, having secured in-principle approval from the Central Bank of the UAE. This milestone marks the first step in the company’s expansion outside of India, as it received clearance for Retail Payment Services, Card Schemes, and Stored Value Facilities. While this initial approval does not yet permit commercial operations, it signals that the company has passed key due diligence phases and is now working closely with local regulators to satisfy the remaining requirements for a full market launch.

Once fully licensed, PhonePe intends to integrate its robust technology infrastructure into the UAE’s rapidly growing digital economy. The firm aims to support the country’s shift toward a cashless society by collaborating with local banks and domestic payment platforms like Aani and Jaywan. By leveraging its vast experience serving 700 million users in India, PhonePe plans to complement the UAE's existing financial framework, ultimately strengthening the payment corridors between the two nations and providing seamless digital transaction options for residents, businesses, and travelers alike.
