Dewa, Acwa Sign Dh1.76 Billion Deal for World’s Largest Desalination Plant
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has officially partnered with Acwa Power in a deal valued at Dh1.76 billion to spearhead the second phase of the Hassyan seawater desalination project. This ambitious expansion is set to cement the site's status as the world’s largest seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) facility, contributing an additional 60 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) to the grid. Once fully operational, the combined capacity of the Hassyan complex will reach 240 MIGD, serving as a cornerstone for Dubai’s long-term water security strategy.
Under the terms of the agreement, which spans a 30-year water purchase commitment, DEWA will maintain a 60 percent ownership stake, with Acwa Power holding the remaining 40 percent. This venture is designed not only to meet the rising demand for water in a growing city but also to align with the UAE’s broader environmental goals, including the Net Zero by 2050 initiative. By utilizing advanced desalination technologies, the project aims to enhance production efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, ensuring that Dubai’s water infrastructure remains both sustainable and resilient well into the future.
