Aviation Sector Faces 2026 Headwinds After Record-Breaking 2025
Following a milestone year in 2025 where global airports facilitated a record 9.8 billion passengers, the aviation industry has encountered significant turbulence in early 2026. According to the latest Airports Council International (ACI) World report, global passenger growth has slowed to a marginal 0.6 percent increase, totaling 4.7 billion travelers in the first half of the year. This cooling effect is particularly visible in the Middle East, where passenger traffic plummeted by 21 percent due to ongoing geopolitical instability and critical disruptions in regional airspace—a stark reversal from the region's robust 6.5 percent growth seen throughout 2025.
Despite the current economic uncertainty and rising operational costs, the long-term outlook for the sector remains resilient. While air cargo continues to show strength, reaching record volumes of 131.2 million tonnes, ACI World emphasizes that fundamental drivers like rising incomes and population growth continue to underpin the desire for air travel. ACI World Director General Justin Erbacci noted that the record-setting performance of 2025 proves that passenger demand is not waning, suggesting that the industry's focus must shift toward expanding airport infrastructure and implementing smarter regulatory policies to support sustainable growth in the coming years.
