Beyond the Paycheck: Why AI and UBI Cannot Solve Our Need for Purpose
At Paracelsus Recovery, we frequently encounter individuals who possess immense wealth and freedom from the daily grind, yet they remain trapped in deep cycles of depression and substance abuse. While society often assumes that removing financial pressure allows people to naturally flourish, our clinical experience suggests otherwise. Financial freedom creates a vacuum, and without a clear sense of purpose or social function, that space is often filled by despair. History shows that humans thrive on contribution; for millennia, our survival has been tied to working within tribes where every member had a vital, recognized role. When that sense of necessity disappears, the psychological toll is severe, leading to health issues and a profound loss of identity that money simply cannot fix.
As we move toward an era of AI-driven job displacement and the likely implementation of Universal Basic Income, we must look beyond the economic transition to address the deeper human crisis of belonging. UBI may provide for our physical survival, but it does not inherently provide a reason to get out of bed. To prevent a societal "hollowing out," we must intentionally foster communities built on mutual dependence—roles where we are genuinely needed by others, whether through mentorship, local leadership, or neighborly support. Nations like the UAE, which are accustomed to building the future with a sense of collective ambition, are uniquely positioned to lead this change. By prioritizing the structure of human contribution alongside economic policy, we can ensure that the future isn't just technologically advanced, but fundamentally meaningful for every individual.
