Microsoft Initiates Major Restructuring: 4,800 Jobs Cut Amid Xbox Overhaul
In a significant move to streamline operations, Microsoft has announced plans to cut approximately 4,800 jobs, representing about two percent of its total global workforce. The vast majority of these reductions are concentrated within its commercial division and the struggling Xbox gaming branch. This decision comes as the tech giant pivots its massive financial resources toward the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence sector. Executive vice president Amy Coleman emphasized that while these specific roles are not being directly replaced by AI, the company must proactively adapt to a shifting global landscape to remain competitive.
The Xbox division, in particular, is facing its most intense restructuring in history, with plans to shed roughly 3,200 roles by the end of the next fiscal year. CEO Asha Sharma characterized the current state of the gaming business as "not healthy," noting that profit margins have lagged significantly behind industry rivals. As part of this overhaul, Microsoft will spin off or sell four major gaming studios—including Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions—while reconsidering the future of other projects. By tightening its focus and addressing recent stumbles with its Game Pass subscription service, leadership aims to stabilize the division and return it to growth by 2027.
