New Underground Tunnel to Improve Sharjah-Dubai Connectivity
To address the persistent traffic congestion between Sharjah and Dubai, Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, has announced the construction of a new double-lane underground tunnel. This major infrastructure project is designed to create a more efficient corridor, linking Al Taawun directly to the Al Nahda bridge in Dubai. The decision follows extensive subterranean engineering assessments, which confirmed that the current road serves as a critical artery for commuters traveling between the two emirates, making this expansion a necessary step to improve regional connectivity.
As part of the construction process, the iconic Al Taawun roundabout monument will be temporarily dismantled to accommodate the excavation and road work. Recognizing the landmark's sentimental value to residents, the Ruler has assured the public that the monument will be carefully redesigned and restored to its original location once the project is finished. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to enhancing urban mobility while simultaneously preserving the cultural and architectural heritage that defines the cityâs identity.
