UAE Fines Foreign Bank Dh200 Million Over Money Laundering Failures
The Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) has issued a massive Dh200 million fine to a local branch of a foreign bank, citing systemic failures regarding anti-money laundering (AML) protocols and governance. Following a rigorous examination, regulators discovered recurring weaknesses in the institution's ability to combat money laundering and terrorism financing, as well as significant lapses in its sanctions framework. Beyond the hefty corporate penalty, the bank has been mandated to undergo a comprehensive remediation program that will be subject to strict independent oversight.
In a move to hold individual leaders accountable, the CBUAE also penalized the bank’s chief executive officer and its head of compliance, imposing fines of Dh500,000 and Dh300,000, respectively. Regulators have further demanded a formal reassessment of these executives to determine if they remain suitable for their high-level positions. This action underscores the central bank's unwavering commitment to maintaining the integrity of the UAE’s financial sector, warning that all institutions and their senior staff must strictly adhere to national regulatory standards to ensure transparency.
