Abu Dhabi Honors Local Icons in Fifth Urban Treasures Awards

Wed, Jun 17, 2026(2h ago)UAE

The fifth Urban Treasures Award Ceremony recently highlighted the heart and soul of Abu Dhabi by honoring 15 long-standing businesses that have become synonymous with the emirate's history. These establishments, ranging from generational tailor shops to classic eateries, were celebrated by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi for their role as "living landmarks." Unlike conventional business awards, this initiative relies on public nominations, ensuring that the winners are those who have genuinely woven themselves into the daily lives, traditions, and memories of local families over the decades.

During the event, officials emphasized that these businesses are more than just commercial entities; they are centers of human connection that have persisted through years of rapid development. Stories from the winners, such as Zubaid Tailoring—where families have sought craftsmanship for three generations—and Hussam Cafeteria, which famously introduced falafel to Al Ain in the 70s, showcase a deep commitment to quality and heritage. By blending traditional values with modern evolution, these 75 recognized establishments continue to serve as vital pillars of Abu Dhabi’s social fabric, proving that the city's most cherished landmarks are the ones where people feel right at home.
