FANR Chief Reviews Barakah Safety Protocols Following May Drone Incident
Hamad Al Kaabi, the Director-General of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), recently visited the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant to personally evaluate the facility's response to the drone incident that occurred on May 17. During his inspection, Al Kaabi met with the emergency teams and personnel who handled the situation, praising their professionalism and the effectiveness of the plant's safety frameworks. He emphasized that the successful containment of the incident—where one drone struck a generator near the facility—demonstrated the robustness of the UAE’s nuclear regulatory system and its unwavering commitment to protecting both the public and the environment.
Beyond the review of the incident response, Al Kaabi conducted a comprehensive assessment of the plant’s current operational status and ongoing maintenance activities. He held discussions with the team of resident inspectors stationed at the site, reinforcing the necessity of maintaining a rigorous, independent regulatory presence to ensure full compliance with international safety standards. The visit underscored FANR’s dedication to transparency and security, highlighting that despite the external security challenges posed by the drone activity, the nuclear facility remains secure, and radiation levels continue to be monitored as completely normal.
