UAE’s Intense Heat Continues as Al Mirzam Star Emerges

Sun, Aug 2, 2026(2h ago)UAE

The appearance of the Al Mirzam star, scientifically recognized as Sirius, has officially signaled the final and most intense chapter of summer in the UAE. Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society, notes that while this celestial event has historically guided generations of locals in agriculture and maritime life, it currently marks a period known as "Jumr Al Qaith," or the embers of summer. Although the UAE recently saw temperatures climbing to 50°C, the rise of Sirius indicates that the atmospheric shift toward higher humidity is beginning, eventually leading to the formation of local "Al Ruwayyah" clouds.

For farmers and residents, this star holds deep cultural significance, particularly as it coincides with the peak of the date harvest season. However, experts warn that relief from the sweltering heat will be gradual rather than immediate. Much like a cooling pot that retains heat long after the fire is extinguished, the region will continue to experience warm temperatures well after Al Mirzam’s appearance, as it waits for the arrival of the Suhail star. While true, comfortable cooling isn't expected until November, there is a silver lining: current meteorological indicators suggest that the upcoming season may bring a particularly promising and wet winter for the Arabian Peninsula.
