The Rise of 'Shadow Workloads' in the UAE: Balancing Expanding Roles with AI-Driven Efficiency

Mon, Aug 3, 2026(2h ago)UAE

A recent study by Robert Walters reveals that the professional landscape in the UAE is shifting rapidly, with nearly 80% of employees reporting that their job responsibilities have ballooned over the past year. This phenomenon, dubbed “shadow workloads,” involves workers taking on extra tasks that fall outside their formal job descriptions without corresponding adjustments to their titles or pay. While many employees are coping by working longer hours or delegating where possible, only a small fraction have officially discussed these increased expectations with their management. Experts suggest that while this agility helps businesses stay lean and competitive, it risks long-term burnout if these expanding roles aren't properly acknowledged or formalized.

To keep up with these evolving demands, a significant majority of the UAE workforce is turning to artificial intelligence to bridge the gap in their skill sets. Integrating AI has allowed employees to handle tasks once thought beyond their reach, boosting overall productivity. However, industry leaders warn that technology should be a tool for efficiency rather than a justification for piling on more work. To ensure sustainable growth and high talent retention, companies must be intentional about how they integrate AI and monitor employee well-being, as recent data indicates that over 70% of professionals are already experiencing some form of fatigue or exhaustion. Moving forward, the key to success will be striking a balance where increased output does not come at the expense of the human element in the workplace.
