Abu Dhabi Police issue stern warning: Overcrowding vehicles leads to 7-day impoundment

Tue, Aug 4, 2026(2h ago)UAE

Abu Dhabi authorities have issued a firm warning to motorists regarding the dangers of transporting more passengers than a vehicle is designed to hold. Officials highlighted that overcrowding a car significantly increases the likelihood of accidents and elevates the risk of severe injuries or fatalities. Common hazards associated with this practice include the inability to provide seat belts for every occupant and a noticeable reduction in the driver's ability to maintain proper control of the vehicle. Despite these clear safety risks, many drivers continue to overlook the gravity of this traffic violation.

To discourage this behavior, the police have reminded the public that violating capacity limits carries serious consequences. Drivers found guilty of carrying excessive passengers will face a Dh500 fine, four traffic points, and a mandatory seven-day vehicle impoundment. Law enforcement is urging all motorists to prioritize safety by ensuring that every passenger has a designated seat and is properly buckled up at all times. Adhering to these regulations is essential for preventing tragedies and maintaining overall road safety across the emirate.
