UAE Expands Seasonal Health Campaign to Combat Broader Respiratory Illnesses
The United Arab Emirates has officially broadened its annual seasonal health initiative, shifting from a focus solely on influenza to a comprehensive strategy addressing a wider range of respiratory infections. The 2026–27 campaign now prioritizes awareness for illnesses like pneumonia and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), alongside the standard flu. Health officials clarify that this expansion is not a reaction to a spike in cases, as current activity levels remain consistent with previous years; rather, it is a proactive, preventive measure aimed at educating residents on how these viruses spread and identifying which demographics are most at risk during the cooler months, which span from September to March.
Vulnerable groups, including young children, older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic conditions or weakened immune systems, are being encouraged to seek appropriate protection. Medical authorities are particularly emphasizing new preventive tools for RSV, such as vaccinations for pregnant women starting from the 28th week, monoclonal antibodies for infants, and specific RSV vaccines for eligible seniors. Beyond these medical interventions, the government continues to urge the public to follow standard hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing, sanitizing high-touch surfaces, and staying home if symptomatic to curb the spread of illness throughout the season.
