Abu Dhabi Police Warn Against Distracted Driving During Eid Al Adha
As the UAE prepares for the Eid Al Adha festivities, Abu Dhabi Police have issued a stern reminder to motorists to keep their eyes on the road rather than their screens. With roads expected to be significantly busier due to holiday travel and family gatherings, officials are urging drivers to refrain from checking or sending greeting messages while behind the wheel. The authorities emphasize that even a momentary glance at a phone can drastically reduce a driver's reaction time, potentially leading to life-threatening accidents. They suggest that all holiday well-wishes should be sent either before heading out or once the vehicle is parked securely.
Distracted driving remains a primary factor in traffic incidents across the country, with recent data linking it to nearly 16 percent of major accidents last year. To deter this dangerous habit, the UAE imposes a Dh800 fine and four black points for any form of inattention, including phone use, eating, or grooming. Furthermore, authorities in Dubai have implemented even stricter measures, with the potential for vehicles to be impounded for up to 30 days starting in October 2024. By prioritizing safety and adhering to traffic regulations, officials hope to ensure that the holiday remains a joyful occasion for everyone on the road.
