Navigating the Road to a UAE License: New Standards for 2027
Starting January 1, 2027, the UAE will implement updated regulations for obtaining a driving license, mandating that applicants achieve a minimum score of 75% on both theory and practical assessments. However, reaching this numerical threshold is no longer a guarantee of success. Under the new framework, specific "dangerous mistakes"—such as losing vehicle control, striking a curb, or disregarding traffic signals—will trigger an immediate failure, regardless of the candidate’s overall performance. Furthermore, any scenario requiring an examiner to verbally or physically intervene to avert a hazard will result in an automatic disqualification.
These changes apply universally to all learners from the start date, including those who may have already begun their training or booked their tests prior to 2027. While the legislation mandates these core standards, it leaves the specifics of implementation, such as retest fees, waiting periods, and precise marking criteria, to the discretion of local licensing authorities. Because individual driving schools and authorities will manage these operational details independently, students should prepare for a more rigorous evaluation process that prioritizes absolute safety over simple point accumulation.
