UAE Expects a Milder, Wetter Winter Due to Strong El Niño
Residents of the UAE should prepare for a noticeably warmer and damper winter season this year, as shifting climate patterns take hold. According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society, the influence of a potent El Niño is expected to drive temperatures, humidity, and rainfall levels above the historical average throughout the coming months. While the peak of this phenomenon is anticipated between November and December, its lingering effects will likely persist well into early spring. Current weather data already reflects this trend, with both daytime and nighttime temperatures hovering roughly 3°C to 5°C higher than what is typical for this time of year.
Despite the outlook for increased precipitation, experts urge the public not to jump to conclusions regarding potential flooding. Al Jarwan clarified that while rainfall is forecasted to be above normal, the severity of the weather depends heavily on how rapidly the rain falls rather than just the total accumulation. This seasonal forecast highlights broader climate trends rather than specific daily predictions. As the global impact of this year’s particularly strong El Niño continues to manifest in various ways—ranging from severe droughts affecting agriculture in Africa and Southeast Asia to shifting weather patterns elsewhere—the UAE remains in a period of transition where the traditional drop in mercury is being delayed by changing oceanic conditions.
