Celebrating Champions: The Visionaries Honoured by the Abu Dhabi Awards
The recent Sharjah International Book Fair 2026 served as a beautiful stage to celebrate four extraordinary individuals whose life’s work has left an indelible mark on the UAE. Among the recipients of the prestigious Abu Dhabi Awards is Abdul Muqeet Abdul Mannan, who began his journey as a 10-year-old boy turning discarded newspapers into sustainable paper bags. His grassroots environmental campaign, sparked by the "UAE Free of Plastic Bags" initiative, grew from a simple household project into a global movement that continues to inspire sustainability across schools and government institutions today.
Alongside this environmental dedication, the awards recognized the vital work of those preserving the soul of the nation. Dr. Ghassan Al Hasan, a pioneer in Nabati poetry, has spent over half a century safeguarding traditional Emirati verses and securing international recognition for local customs, while historian Dr. Faleh Handhal has dedicated four decades to documenting the UAE’s unique linguistic heritage, ensuring Bedouin dialects are never lost to time. Rounding out this group of trailblazers is Dr. Ayesha Musabbah Al Memari, a medical pioneer who has shattered glass ceilings as an emergency medicine expert, a humanitarian volunteer, and the first Emirati woman to conquer Antarctica's highest peak. Together, these honourees remind us that passion, whether applied to healthcare, literature, or ecology, is the most powerful tool for shaping a lasting cultural legacy.
