India Replacing mAadhaar: Key Changes and How to Switch
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is officially phasing out the legacy mAadhaar application in favor of a revamped, more secure digital platform. Designed to streamline identity verification for the country’s 1.44 billion Aadhaar holders, the new app introduces a privacy-first approach. Key improvements include face authentication, biometric locking mechanisms, and a secure QR-code system that eliminates the need for physical photocopies at hotels, hospitals, or government offices. Additionally, the new platform is far more versatile, allowing users to manage up to five different profiles on a single device, which is particularly useful for parents tracking their children’s credentials.
Transitioning to the updated system is a straightforward process for existing users. After downloading the app from the Google Play or Apple App Store, users simply need to select their preferred language and register using their Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Beyond improved security, the app simplifies administrative tasks by enabling users to update specific details like addresses and phone numbers directly from their phones, bypassing the need for in-person visits to Aadhaar centers. With enhanced tracking for authentication history and refined data-sharing controls, the new app provides a smarter, safer, and more autonomous experience for managing digital identities.
