Tropical Storm Jangmi Batters Japan: Hundreds of Flights Grounded and Nine Injured
Southwestern Japan is currently grappling with the aftermath of Tropical Storm Jangmi, which has left a trail of destruction across the region. The storm, which was recently downgraded from a typhoon, has caused widespread power outages, leaving roughly 47,000 households in the Kagoshima and Okinawa regions without electricity. Authorities have confirmed at least nine injuries in Okinawa, with reports indicating that victims were hurt by debris flying into vehicles or by being knocked off their feet by the intense, unrelenting winds.
As the system tracks northward, the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued urgent warnings regarding the heightened risk of landslides, severe flooding, and dangerous high waves. In response to the worsening conditions, major carriers All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines have grounded approximately 600 flights, with further travel disruptions expected in Tokyo and surrounding areas. Government spokesperson Minoru Kihara has urged residents to prioritize their safety, advising everyone in the path of the storm to monitor local municipal alerts closely and evacuate early if instructed to do so.
