Rescue Operations Intensify as Philippine Quake Death Toll Climbs to 55
Search and rescue teams in the southern Philippines are facing significant hurdles, including persistent rain and recurring aftershocks, as they work to recover victims following Monday’s massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Mindanao. The official death toll has climbed to 55, with 31 people still unaccounted for. While local authorities have made progress in clearing major debris from roads in the hardest-hit areas like Sarangani province, the ongoing environmental challenges continue to disrupt recovery efforts and delay the delivery of essential supplies.
Provincial disaster officials have expressed fading hope for finding survivors, noting that the window for rescue has largely closed since the tremor occurred. Consequently, the focus has shifted toward the somber task of retrieving bodies. In response to the widespread destruction, President Ferdinand Marcos has committed 100 million pesos to the reconstruction of infrastructure in General Santos, including the city’s damaged hall, while aid continues to be airlifted to remote communities still struggling without power.
