Philippine Senate Elects Gatchalian as New Leader Amid Political Shifting
The Philippine Senate has undergone a major leadership change, with Sherwin Gatchalian officially securing the presidency on Wednesday, June 17. During a special session convened by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Gatchalian garnered the support of 13 senators, effectively ending Alan Peter Cayetano’s tenure. The shift was finalized when Senator Joel Villanueva joined the Gatchalian bloc, leaving Cayetano with only 11 supporters. This transition marks the fourth change in Senate leadership during the 20th Congress, underscoring the ongoing volatility within the nation's political landscape.
Following this realignment, the Senate moved quickly to solidify its structure by electing Vicente Sotto III as the new Senate President Pro Tempore. With a stable majority now in place, the chamber is pivoting toward the upcoming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, which is tentatively set to begin on July 6. As the Senate prepares for these high-stakes proceedings, Gatchalian is also expected to take on a prominent role in representing the upper house during the President's upcoming State of the Nation Address and the opening of the Second Regular Session.
