Oman Establishes Temporary Maritime Corridor for Strait of Hormuz
In a move to support global trade, Oman recently announced the creation of a temporary maritime corridor designed to facilitate vessel movement through the Strait of Hormuz. According to state media reports, this initiative was developed in close coordination with the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Ships intending to navigate this specific route must follow the official coordinates established by both the Omani authorities and the IMO to ensure safe and orderly passage.
This strategic measure is primarily intended to safeguard the freedom of navigation through one of the world's most critical shipping lanes. By providing this route, Oman aims to uphold international maritime standards and the Law of the Sea, which strictly prohibit the imposition of transit fees on vessels. Ultimately, the decision underscores the Sultanate’s commitment to maintaining open and unobstructed access for international shipping in the region.
