Syrian Officials Detain Former Republican Guard Commander for War Crimes
Syrian authorities have apprehended Youssef Habib, a former Republican Guard commander, as part of a widening effort to hold figures from the previous regime accountable for wartime atrocities. According to the Interior Ministry, Habib was taken into custody in Aleppo due to his alleged role in human rights abuses against civilians. Investigators claim that during his tenure as a major in the 106th Brigade, he was responsible for identifying and detaining activists at checkpoints, who were subsequently transferred to high-ranking officials to be executed within the brigade’s headquarters.
Habib’s arrest is the latest move in a series of security operations initiated by the new administration following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government in late 2024. After serving in various military capacities, Habib had reached the position of Republican Guard commander for Syria’s eastern region as recently as early 2023. These ongoing detentions reflect a systematic push by the current leadership to address the legacy of the conflict and restore public order by bringing those accused of severe violations during the Assad era to justice.
