Tensions Escalate as Pakistan Airstrikes Hit Afghanistan, Sparking Civilian Casualty Claims
Overnight airstrikes conducted by Pakistan in eastern Afghanistan have ignited a fresh diplomatic firestorm, with Islamabad claiming the operations successfully neutralized 25 militants while the Taliban government reports a devastating toll of 36 civilians killed and 163 wounded. Pakistani officials stated that the precision strikes, which targeted the Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar provinces, were a direct response to a lethal weekend attack on a paramilitary camp in Karachi. According to Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, the military action focused on the Jamaat-ul-Ahrar group, which Islamabad accuses of orchestrating violence within its borders, maintaining that these efforts are critical to domestic security.
In contrast, the Taliban government has vehemently condemned the offensive, labeling it a "cowardly act of aggression" and disputing Pakistanâs claims regarding the targets. This latest flare-up highlights the deeply fractured relationship between the two nations, which has remained volatile since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. Despite recent attempts at mediation by third parties like China, the border region remains a hotbed of sporadic conflict. Afghan authorities continue to deny that their territory serves as a safe haven for militants, instead arguing that Pakistanâs military interventions have consistently resulted in significant civilian loss of life, further complicating an already fragile regional stability.
