Karnataka CM D.K. Shivakumar Threatens Total Ban on Gutka and Paan Masala Over Drug Concerns
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has issued a stern warning to manufacturers of paan masala and gutka, stating that the state government will implement a complete ban on these products if evidence of narcotic substances being mixed into them is confirmed. Taking to social media, Shivakumar emphasized that the state is prepared to crack down on the multi-billion-rupee industry to protect public health. This move follows reports indicating that various intoxicating additives are being surreptitiously included in these products, potentially fueling a growing substance abuse crisis.
Addressing the broader issue of addiction, Shivakumar called on students and medical professionals to join a collective effort toward building a "Drug-Free Karnataka." The concern is particularly significant given that gutka consumption has skyrocketed across India, with recent data showing that nearly a quarter of rural households in Karnataka now consume the product. Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan echoed these sentiments at a recent conclave in Bengaluru, stressing that combating the rise of synthetic and traditional drug abuse requires a multifaceted approach involving families, educational institutions, and law enforcement. As Karnataka remains the nation's leading producer of areca nuts, the government is under increasing pressure to regulate these substances, especially given the World Health Organization's clear warnings regarding their link to various forms of oral and esophageal cancer.
