UN Calls for Immediate Release of Gazan Doctor Held by Israel
A UN human rights panel has officially labeled the detention of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, as arbitrary, demanding his immediate release. The Working Group on Arbitrary Detention stated that his continued imprisonment violates international human rights standards, suggesting that his case may point to a broader, systematic pattern of illegal detentions by Israeli authorities. Despite international pressure and urgent concerns from legal teams regarding his rapidly deteriorating health—which includes reports of torture and solitary confinement—the Israeli Supreme Court recently denied an appeal for his release based on undisclosed evidence.
The 52-year-old pediatrician, who has been held since late 2024, is one of at least 14 Gazan medical professionals currently detained without formal charges. While the Israeli military has alleged that Dr. Abu Safiya is linked to Hamas, both his supporters and health officials have vehemently denied these claims, noting a lack of credible evidence. Human rights advocates argue that his ongoing imprisonment reflects a deliberate strategy to dismantle Gaza's healthcare infrastructure. With his lawyer and aid organizations warning that his life remains in imminent danger, critics emphasize that continued inaction by those with the authority to intervene makes them complicit in a potential tragedy.
